My Thoughts...

I am 22 years old and I attend UCF's satellite campus in Clermont, Florida. I'm majoring in Early Childhood Education and would love to teach Kindergarten or Pre-K some day soon. This is my second major, as I switched from Nursing in the beginning of my Junior year. I am a Christian, as some of my posts will reflect, but I believe in a God who is loving. I believe in equal rights for everyone. Who am I to tell you how to lead your life?

Seriously? Seriously. Because teachers don’t wake up early, too, or anything…
*head explodes*

They could also go to bed before 1 am sometime.

Today I subbed in a 4th grade classroom. I was pretty excited, as I have 6 of them in one of my reading groups and they are great kids. I went up to touch base with their teacher and she told me all they had to do today was watch a movie, go to lunch, go to the library, and watch another movie….

I have found that telling them you expect them to act like they are in a movie theater, that is silent, they understand what you expect from them.

Today I was a floater sub, as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade teachers had their grade level meetings. However, one of the 5th grade teachers is going down to 2nd grade next year, and she had to attend the meeting as well. I am an Early Childhood major, so 5th grade is not my area at all.

They were working on Power Point projects for their selected animal. Two boys, one of which is the older brother of a girl in the class I work in a lot, couldn’t get their power point to load. Turns out, there was an error and nothing saved. They had to start from scratch. I told them I would help them find the pictures they had spent so long looking for as well as help them type up the facts they had written down. Because they had already done this before, I felt that typing it up for them, and then having them rearrange it and proof read it was acceptable. I am a quick typist, and their deadline is approaching quickly.

However, these boys showed me a few tricks and short cuts I didn’t know about! They also said they had been doing Power Point since 3rd grade. THIRD GRADE!! I didn’t even know what Power Point was until 7th, let alone make one! They were doing animations, backgrounds, etc. I was impressed. This just shows how much technology is used in kids lives these days.

But I think the best part of the day came when I walked into the 3rd grade classroom I was in, and the kids look up and several say, “YES! IT’S THE NICE SUB!!” I subbed only once in this class, sometime last year. Must have made a good impression.

I was a writing prompt that I was given in my Creativity in Curriculum Class, and I made it into a poem. I’m kind of proud of it, I’m not going to lie. Sorry the format is so weird.

The Octopus’s Shoes

There once was an octopus who wore shoes

But there was one he would always lose

It would always make him late

For his very important date

But all he could do

Was look for the shoe

He would rather be you

and have two shoes

not eight.

I subbed in the K-1 classroom that I frequently work in. Today also happened to be their spring play of “The Wide Mouth Frog.” The classroom teacher was in grade level meetings most of the day.

There is one little boy, I will call him J, who came to the classroom developmentally delayed (chronologically 5, but developmentally 3) with behavior and social problems. He has come such a long way, however I have been told that things are going on in his home life right now that are negatively affecting his behavior (he is hitting, yelling, grabbing, etc), but the teacher couldn’t go into the details that she knew. All I was told was to be extra patient with him and give him extra TLC.

So this afternoon before dismissal, I called him over and we had some one-on-one story time while the class was watching a movie. I then asked him (not even thinking) if his dad was going to be able to make it to the play. He shook his head no, and said that he couldn’t make it. I told him that was too bad, but I’d be there for him. He then went on to say the most shocking words I have ever heard from a child: “He can’t come because he is in jail for choking me.”

I was so stunned. I automatically held him a bit closer and said I was sorry he had gotten hurt by his dad, but he is safe at school and that I loved him. I wanted to cry right there, but I somehow kept my composure. Child abuse hits too close to home with me, because a little girl I babysat from 4 months - 2 years was killed by her mother’s boyfriend. She was like a daughter to me.

I’ve covered this boy in prayers, and will continue to do so. I am extremely blessed to have such a wonderful dad, and it is horrible that so many fathers today are deadbeats.

I know I will have more students like this, possibly even worse, as I continue my career in education. It helps that my first encounter is something that is completely out of my hands and is being handled by the proper administrators and authorities.

wear-no-shoeshine asked: What's your all time favourite song?

This is a hard one!! Songs with words change all the time for me. But I could never get tired of Pachabel’s Cannon in D Minor on the piano. It is the most soothing thing I have ever heard.

No one asks me questions, so sure, I’d love some!!
